Telephony and VoIP
The end of the landline is coming...
Are you ready for 2025? BT Openreach (A BT Group business) is responsible for copper telephone lines in the UK (known as PSTN – Public Switched Telephone Network) have announced that they will be ending the use of analogue voice circuits by the end of 2025.
Copper telephone lines delivering analogue voice circuits have existed since the invention of the telephone and endured for more than 100 years almost unchanged. Several standards have been added on top, but it is time to say goodbye to this aging technology to make way for a faster, modern digital communications network.
There are of course many alternatives, and we are here to help you make the best decision. See below for some of your options.
No matter what option you choose, Cubenetix can configure your system to your requirements, port/transfer your existing telephone number(s) if required and ensure you have ongoing support
Landline Replacement over DSL
All providers of fixed line broadband will be offering a digital voice option. This is often the easiest option for consumers who already have a broadband service delivered over their existing telephone line however it is rarely the cheapest and is the least flexible option, completely reliant on your existing DSL provider
- Requires you to use the ISP-provided modem/router
- May support battery backup (Provider dependant)
- Works with your existing telephone handsets
Voice over IP (Internet Telephony)
This is the modern replacement of the landline, using the internet to transmit calls providing you far more flexibility in where calls are routed, what devices you can use and who provides your service
- No provider lock - any ISP can provide the data connection, works with 4G/5G and Starlink too!
- Requires a SIP gateway for traditional phone, or a VoIP compatible handset
- Calls can be answered using a VoIP App on your mobile, even away from home
- Generally very little to no "line rental" cost
- Most providers support emergency calling, but you will need to ensure you have backups in place for power failure etc
